Kansas City Artist Dean Kube
Kansas City Artist, Dean Kube

Dean Kube, a Kansas City-based artist, has dedicated his career to painting and creating expressive, vibrant art. I’ve known Dean for over 25 years now and have followed his work throughout those years. His passion for capturing the honest, genuine human experience is present in both the objects and people he paints.

For Dean, painting isn’t just a practice—it’s a way of living. His work pulses with energy, layered textures, and expressive movement, all rooted in a lifelong commitment to creativity and exploration.

A Calling, Not Just a Career

Dean always knew art was more than a hobby. After experimenting with illustration and graphic design, he kept returning to painting—the one place where everything clicked.

“Painting has always felt special to me,” he says. “It’s how I express myself freely, without worrying about what the market wants.”

Since graduating art school in 1993, Dean has maintained a steady studio practice. Once a night painter balancing a day job, he now paints during daylight hours, embracing how shifting light transforms his work.

Building Energy Through Layers

Working primarily in acrylic, Dean thrives on the medium’s speed and flexibility. Quick drying times allow him to layer, rework, and push each piece further.

“The more layers I add, the more expressive the painting becomes,” he explains.

His process is intuitive and spontaneous—each brushstroke builds on the last, creating texture, movement, and a sense of life that defines his style.

Painting What You Feel

Dean’s work isn’t about perfect realism—it’s about energy. Whether he’s painting figures, portraits, or animals like owls and fawns, his goal is to make the entire piece feel alive.

“I want the painting itself to have life,” he says.

Recurring natural elements in his work reflect a deeper awareness of how humans coexist with the environment—a quiet but powerful theme running beneath the surface.

The Long Game: Discipline Over Perfection

For Dean, success isn’t measured in sales or recognition—it’s measured in consistency.

“If I go too long without creating, something feels missing,” he says.

He emphasizes the importance of showing up, even when the work isn’t perfect. Failure, in his view, isn’t a setback—it’s essential.

“You learn from it. It’s part of the process.”

That mindset shapes how he teaches, encouraging artists to lower expectations early on so they can experiment, take risks, and discover their voice.

Inspiration Is Everywhere

Dean doesn’t wait for inspiration—he looks for it. From visiting other artists’ studios to traveling the world, he finds ideas in unexpected places.

A recent trip to Guatemala, for instance, sparked fascination with textures—weathered doors, worn surfaces, even keyholes.

“You never know what will inspire you,” he says.

Staying Open to What’s Next

Looking back, Dean credits openness as one of the most important lessons in his journey.

“Life doesn’t always go the way you plan,” he says, “but sometimes that’s exactly what you need.”

For him, creativity is about noticing the overlooked—the subtle details, fleeting moments, and quiet expressions that others might miss. That’s where the real work begins.
