A Family Tradition
There are some businesses you walk into and immediately feel something special. Legacy Fabrics in Mission, Kansas, is one of those places.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting this darling mother-and-daughter-owned shop, and I left with that wonderful feeling you get when you’ve discovered a place that is about so much more than simply shopping.
The story behind Legacy Fabrics makes it even more special.
Founder Jamie learned to sew from her mother, Jane Cooper, who learned from her mother, Melma Lea Higgins, of Chilhowee, Missouri. Jamie then passed that tradition along by teaching her own three daughters to sew.
Now that’s a legacy!
More Than Fabric
Sewing is about so much more than fabric and thread. It’s creativity, patience, challenge, skill, and the joy of turning an idea into something uniquely your own.
Jamie also remembers traveling to Kansas City to shop at longtime fabric stores such as Kaplan’s and Cy Rudnick’s. She created countless outfits using their unique, fashion-forward fabrics. Those memories—and the women who taught her—helped inspire the name Legacy Fabrics.
I love that the name honors not only her grandmother and mother, but all the women who have passed the art of sewing from one generation to the next.
A New Chapter
Today, Jamie and her daughter are carrying that tradition forward with their own fabric store in Mission.
When I visited, I could feel the warmth and enthusiasm behind the business. There is something wonderful about seeing two generations working side by side, sharing their talents and creating something that connects the past with the present.
And then there are the fabrics! Whether you’re an experienced quilter or sewist, working on a special project, or simply someone who loves beautiful textiles, it’s hard not to feel inspired.
