There’s something special about a book recommendation that comes from someone you love—especially when that someone has a lifetime of stories behind them. This is the second title in a collection of over 400 books my mother-in-law, Bev, shared over the years. Each one feels like a small window into her world, and Water for Elephants is no exception.

Set during the Great Depression, the story follows Jacob as a young veterinary student whose life is abruptly derailed. Orphaned and penniless, he jumps onto a moving train and finds himself swept into the world of a traveling circus—the Benzini Brothers. There, he forms a deep connection with Rosie, an elephant who becomes central to both his work and his emotional journey, and Marlena, the circus’s star performer.
Love, Hardship, and Harsh Realities
But this isn’t a whimsical circus tale. Beneath the spectacle lies a gritty, unforgiving reality. Marlena is trapped in a volatile marriage to August, an abusive animal trainer whose cruelty casts a long shadow over the story. The novel explores powerful themes—love and compassion, cruelty and survival, and the complex bond between humans and animals. It also plays with the idea of illusion versus reality, both within the circus and in the way memories are shaped over time.
Why This Story Matters
I can’t help but think this book resonated deeply with Bev because of her own life experiences. Like my parents, she grew up during the Great Depression and understood hardship in a very real way. More than that, she had a deeply compassionate heart—especially when it came to animals. That empathy shines through in a story like this.

Water for Elephants is the kind of book that tugs at your heart while completely immersing you in its world.
