I’ve recently become a little obsessed with a charming, women-owned shop in the Kansas City area—Zen Donkey Farms. Located in Fairway, this unique spot specializes in organic, raw, cold-pressed juices, plant-based foods, and refreshing sparkling waters. After opening their Fairway location this summer, they’ve already expanded with a second shop inside the AdventHealth Cancer Institute in Merriam, Kansas.

You can also find them out in the community at local farmers markets—like the Overland Park Farmers Market in Old Overland Park on Saturdays—making it easy to grab something nourishing while supporting local.

More Than a Juice Bar

Founded in 2016, Zen Donkey Farms is more than just a wellness-focused café. The business supports a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Zen Donkey Experience, which is dedicated to improving quality of life for both adults and children. Through meaningful interactions with rescued donkeys, participants can build skills, find connection, and experience the therapeutic benefits of working with these gentle animals.

Fresh, Local, and Nourishing

Inside the shop, everything feels intentionally designed for accessibility and wellness. The menu features a variety of cold-pressed juices, nutrient-dense chia puddings (I’m currently hooked on the raspberry chia pudding), and a thoughtfully curated lunch selection. From wraps and salads to hearty power bowls, everything is made with organically grown, locally sourced ingredients—free from fillers and artificial additives. Many of their ingredients are even grown in partnership with sister farms across Kansas and Missouri.

The philosophy behind Zen Donkey Farms is simple but powerful: combine the preventative health benefits of plant-based nutrition with the mental wellness that comes from connecting with animals. It’s a holistic approach that truly sets them apart.

What to Try

Their juice menu reflects this mission. Standouts include the “Wild Burro,” a vibrant blend of cucumber, kale, green apple, fennel, ginger, parsley, and lime, and “Donkey Dreams,” a bright mix of carrot, pineapple, orange, ginger, turmeric, and lemon. Each drink is crafted to support overall health and boost antioxidants.

The lunch menu is equally impressive. The “Vitality Salad” features local greens tossed in a tangy apple vinaigrette with cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cranberries, almonds, and sunflower seeds. Another favorite is the “Curried Cauliflower Wrap,” filled with curried cauliflower, kale, hummus, lemon juice, celery, cranberries, red cabbage, and red chili cashews, all wrapped in a locally made Yoli tortilla.

A Business with Heart

Zen Donkey Farms is exactly the kind of local business you can feel good about supporting. Their mission is rooted in healing—both physical and mental—and that intention shines through in everything they do.

Beyond the shop, they also host events at the farm, including private gatherings, fundraising dinners, and their signature Donkey Experience. If you’re lucky, you might even snag a spot for a private donkey meet-and-greet (though there’s usually a waiting list—for good reason!).

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for something that nourishes both body and mind, I highly recommend stopping by or visiting their website to learn more. Trust me—you’ll walk away feeling the “Zen.”
