In the heart of downtown Independence, you’ll find a renaissance of charming shops, unique boutiques, and inviting restaurants. Although I grew up in the area, I have to admit that I hadn’t visited downtown Independence in years — and I was truly missing out.

On a sunny afternoon, my husband and I made the short trip to Independence to track down a local treasure I couldn’t wait to share with you: Gilbert & Whitney Co..

A Store Rich in Local History

This adorable specialty food and kitchen store carries a fascinating piece of local history. Gilbert & Whitney Co. is named after the original mercantile store founded in 1832 by local Latter-day Saint leaders Algernon Sidney Gilbert and Newel K. Whitney on the historic Independence Square.
The original store served as both a supplier of goods and a financial center for church members before it was destroyed by a violent mob in 1833 during efforts to force church members out of the area, according to the Joseph Smith Papers.

Today, the beautifully restored building houses a thriving local business filled with high-end cookware, gourmet foods, gifts, and even cooking classes and demonstrations.

A Beautiful Restoration in Downtown Independence

Owners Ken and Cindy McClain purchased the property and meticulously restored the historic 1832 building into the stunning shop it is today. Their efforts are part of a much larger revitalization of Historic Downtown Independence that began in 1998.

Over the years, the McClains have helped breathe new life into the area with multiple restaurants, retail stores, and community-focused businesses that make downtown Independence a destination once again.

Gilbert & Whitney Co. is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and it’s well worth the visit.

Gilbert & Whitney Co. also carries an impressive collection of cookware, glassware, and nostalgic kitchen accessories that beautifully blend vintage charm with modern elegance.

I especially loved the ceramic reproduction “Lovebird” salt and pepper shakers that seemed to transport you back in time. The store also features retro-inspired glassware, pitchers, creamers, and serving pieces that would make any gathering feel special.

If you’re searching for the perfect wedding or special occasion gift, this is definitely a place to keep in mind.
